Hell's Point Ammunition Dump
This area was established as a major Ammunition Dump for the South West Pacific area in 1942 -43. As well as all types of US ammunition tanks and captured Japanese ordnance were stored here .
In November 1943 a nearby grass fire caused the dump to catch fire and explode over a 3 day period. Due to the remaining live ammunition in this area it remains a restricted and patroled area to this day.
The Stuart tanks in these photos were stripped of partsd and probably ended up in the 20 x 40 metre blast crater in 1945. They were dug out in 2012.
